Surprisingly when legislation requires food products to be covered in lists of ingredients, disposable nappies are not, and their chemical composition is not readily available. Our real nappies are made with traditional cotton and bamboo fabrics whose composition is well known and safe. The choice of material also makes real nappies soft and comfortable for your baby to wear. Disposable nappies are wasteful, single use items. Reusable cloth nappies are a simple, easy alternative and a practical way for us to look after the environment for the future of our children.
Reducing your Environmental Impact
By using real nappies you don’t just reduce the impact you and your family make by reducing your amount of weekly rubbish. The environmental footprint of a product is the amount of resources needed for its manufacture. The energy cost of a disposable nappy is higher than that of a real nappy even before you throw it away and reach for another. Of course, washing real nappies requires energy but this is a small environmental cost in comparison to using disposables throughout a baby’s nappy wearing years. Using a nappy laundry service can prove to be the most environmentally friendly option.
A few facts.........
Disposable nappies account for approximately 4% of all household waste within the UK
Over 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away each day in the UK.
Landfill space is running out - 90% of nearly 3 billion nappies thrown away in the UK every year end up in landfill creating methane gas that contributes to global warming (source WEN)
Disposable nappies have nearly twice the environmental impact of home laundered nappies and over two and a half times the impact of service washed nappies. So, by using real nappies, you can choose to do your bit for the environment.
Saving You Money
By washing your own nappies at home you can save between £500 and £700 over the nappy wearing years of your child. Simply wash at 40 degrees and line dry or if needed nappies can be tumble dried. Using a laundry service is an alternative to home washing and usually works out to be about the same cost as using disposable nappies.
Health
Put the poo down the loo! That is where it should go, not in landfill sites.
There are many reasons why a baby may suffer from nappy rash but using real nappies is not one of them. Your child is no more likely to suffer from nappy rash if you use a real nappy.
